I could hear the emotion in his voice. We were talking about his livelihood—his job. Of course, he would be emotional! He was worried that he could lose his sponsorship and be at risk of deportation. The job market is tough for anyone, but it’s especially challenging for foreign national candidates relying on visa sponsorship.

The Immigration Job Landscape

It’s tough to be on the hunt for a project, to stand out and stay competitive among other talent — especially when you have found a project you enjoy, that utilizes cutting-edge tools and exciting technology, a location that you and your family have settled into, for an end client with individuals you’ve built lasting relationships with.
But what do you do when your current employer can’t maneuver through the complex immigration world? Perhaps they aren’t paying you on time — putting your status at risk, or maybe they are a small organization that doesn’t have the right immigration support like attorneys and immigration specialists at their fingertips or perhaps you are close to maxing out your visa and your employer can’t or won’t start your Green Card.

MicrosoftTeams-image (14)That was happening with the candidate I mentioned who I recently spoke with on the phone. When he came to the US, he did not have solid guidance about how the complex immigration employment system worked. He found a small employer to sponsor him but soon realized that this employer may not be the best fit. He was very fearful of his current employer’s ability to handle the complex immigration world. There were a variety of red flags. Even basic needs weren’t being met: he wasn’t getting paid on time (!) which put his status at risk.

At PG, when we speak to candidates, we understand how important so many factors are. That’s why we take the time to truly understand each candidate’s background and story, so we can provide the best solution.

For this particular candidate, I came to understand that he really wanted to stay with his current client.

  • He liked the work he was doing
  • He valued the relationships he built
  • His family liked the location he resided in

He thought because he had a sponsorship with one employment agency to work for an end client, he would have to find a new agency and a new end client if he wanted to find something more stable. He was in a tough spot though because he loved his current assignment so much! Was it worth quitting, reentering the highly competitive job market, and risk not finding another role that was as good of a fit?
